I finally got around to doing a new DIY project. This has been top of my list for a while and I'm so glad I finally made my own. I've seen these types of tops on so many people, mainly bloggers, and on so many websites. I just had to make my own. It's so simple, and here's what you'll need:
-A man's shirt (men's are bigger, looser and better if you want it to be a dress)
-A strip of elastic a little bit longer than the width of your shoulders
-Sewing machine and matching thread
-Scissors
-Dress Pins
Step 1: Cut the neck/collar off the shirt. Don't cut off too much of the shoulders (just the tip)
Step 2: Turn down a 1 - 1.5 inch fold around the shoulder area of the shirt. Pin in place. This will be for the elastic so make sure its thick enough for your elastic to go throw, and thin enough so the elastic will stay in place and won't twist around inside the garment.
Step 3: Sew this fold with your sewing machine, removing the pins as you go. Leave a gap for the elastic to be threaded through. Secure the strip of elastic around the end of a knitting needle or chopstick to help feed it throw. Once threaded through, secure the two ends of the elastic by machine stitching them together (remember to allow for a small overlap when measuring how much elastic you need).
And Voila! I styled mine with jeans underneath, but these can also be styled as a shirt dress. I think I'll wait til summer to wear it like that though. I'm planning on doing a second one from a striped shirt - Very chic!
